I had to ask the question. I was live on Zoom with Fabrizio Buonamasa-Stigliani, we were encouraged to ask anything that was on our minds. So how about this elephant in the room: “Are you nervous about the year you don’t break a world record with one of your watches?” He played a straight bat, which I’ve learned is unlike the man. He got a tiny bit tangled up on what will come in future years – as a watch brand’s R&D cycle has them at least two years ahead – and then he quickly rounded off by saying we’d just have to wait and see.I asked, because 2021 was the 7th year in a row that the hitherto jewellery Maison who has monstered many pure watchmakers in the last decade, has broken yet another watchmaking record. This time for the slimmest ever perpetual calendar wristwatch.But the genius in this extraordinary watch is only partly explained by its thinness – as Fabrizio explained in our interview, it’s at least as noteworthy for its supremely readable dial layout, which required endless revisions of the hands alone to make sure legibility was optimised. The switch-up to retrograde date display in the top-half of the dial and the retrograde leap year indicator at the base, and the two simple as possible displays of day and date make this an absolute snap to read at a glance.So, why should you watch this video?
