The Panerai Radiomir Otto Giorni helps cement a new era for the brand, and hopefully signifies a lot more experimentation in the future.The Panerai Radiomir Otto Giorni takes a lot of inspiration from the earliest-known prototype of Panerai's wristwatches, originally made in 1936. Having invented the Radiomir luminous compound for gun sights two decades earlier, Panerai teamed up with Rolex to produce watches for the Royal Italian Navy. The waters around ports are especially murky, so they made the most legible dial possible within a huge 47mm cushion case. Echoing the age of that model, Panerai have used a PVD coating technique to give their recycled eSteel case a slightly tarnished look. They call this Brunito, or Burnished, which evokes the look of an acid etching or vintage chrome plating but without the actual damage to worry about.While the 47mm case size is definitely one part of Panerai's DNA, the reduction down to 45mm is a welcome change for the Radiomir Otto Giorni. The lug-to-lug length is now 48mm, making it a much friendlier prospect to those with average or smaller wrists. The dial, available in blue or brown, is lavish with a smoked gradient, and creamy faux-aged lume in the sandwich construction. The numerals for 12 and 6 are present, while the 3 and 9 have been replaced by a small seconds display and a sign for the watch's 8 day power reserve.
