There were two segments thus far, the Powermatic 80 and Quartz, delivering the mechanical or hassle-free quartz experience many were looking for. A third segment, the PRX Chronograph, entered the mix – introducing greater complication into the collection. We already knew the PRX has its roots in ’70s Tissot design, making the introduction of the fourth PRX variant all the more understandable. Directly inspired by the Quartz Digital from 1977, the new Tissot PRX Digital is available in two sizes and three different colourways.1977 Tissot Quartz DigitalLooking at the original 1977 models, the inspiration they provided for the PRX Digital is immediately clear. With sharper and more angular cases, along with a small switch up in dial aesthetic, the new PRX Digital is presented in three stainless steel configurations. Two are in uncoated stainless steel, one with a black dial and one with a case-matching silver dial. The third, and perhaps more festive configuration, is a yellow gold PVD-coated model with a case-matching, gold-toned dial.The dials, unlike the 1977 models, do not have a ribbed texture, and the backlit digital display has been enlarged to better display the indications. Like the originals, though, they utilise a positive digital display – meaning the information is displayed in black with a brighter background. Each of the three configurations are offered in 35mm and 40mm, with each being 10.9mm thick and 100 metres water-resistant.Aside from the case pushers which you help you interact with the various digital functions such as dual time zones, a stopwatch, or alarm, the design of the watch largely remains familiar. You have a case-matching bracelet with a butterfly clasp and quick-release spring bars, with the overall aesthetic largely satin-brushed, with hints of mirror polishing. All PRX Digital models utilise a Swiss-made quartz digital calibre, the cal. DGT-2040, which offers four years of battery life with standard usage.With the PRX being a great entry opportunity into the world of mechanical watchmaking (at least within the niche of ‘watchfam’), it will be interesting to see just how much watch collectors adopt the Tissot PRX Digital.
